The 14th Annual Tavender Trophy was held at the Canberra Croquet Club on a cool, fine Sunday 17th March. With 14 entrants, the draw was a creative arrangement of 2 blocks with one team playing a 4th game. The draw is a random pairing of a player with captaincy experience and a newer player. Four new players attended three coaching lessons held in February.
In a very competitive final, the winning pair of Tony and Catherine won over Adrienne Fazekas and Craig Oxley. In accepting the trophy, Catherine thanked Tony for being ‘a calm Captain who cleaned up her mistakes.’
Comment: (JP) The Tavender trophy is a great example of how an intra club comp can promote Gateball within a club. Canberra’s longevity playing gateball has much to do with the foresightedness of those who established this as a regular event. It is a tribute to those who have continued the tradition. It is also great that the event is able to honour one of Gateball’s early advocates, Peter Tavender.
Judy and the Canberra team are also be be commended on the pre-event coaching program that new players to the game undertook over a several weeks before participating in the event. Judy shared details of this program on Gateball Australia’s email Coaching Network. Contact your club’s level 1 GB coach for further information
