Over the long weekend at the start of October, seven teams competed in the Toowoomba Gateball Tournament. Sharing the limelight with the wonderful Carnival of Flowers, Toowoomba’s Gateball Tournament was a great success. Battling cool winds on Saturday, everyone was pleased when Sunday brought sunny warm weather. But, come Monday morning heavy showers fell and made playing the games quite a challenge. But, being the enthusiasts we are, all the games went ahead including semifinals and finals. There were two blocks of 6 pairs in the Doubles Tournament.
The opening ball through the first gate was successfully completed by Cr. Geoff McDonald who spoke very highly of the work done by the Toowoomba Croquet Club. The President, Paul Reynolds, was pleased with the effort given by all of the club members to make the event a success.
The winning team was Ipswich Gateball Team named Snoopys. The presentation was made by Cr. Geoff McDonald. Second was the Toowoomba Blue team.
The winning Doubles was Elaine and Bruan Rubock from Wynnum. Second place went to Joy and Jill from Toowoomba. The presentation was made by Doug Freeman.
One highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to celebrate the 93rd birthday with popular Toowoomba player, Frank Harding. He is a regular and valuable team member who travels all over the State to play in his Toowoomba team.
Happy birthday. Frank
