I played in the UK Championships for Switzerland and would like to think that we could have NZ teams playing in that event in future.   279. Thanks Keith for the observations. I’m new to the game but can understand clearly the tactics you discuss. I agree that sparking accurately is the crux of the game including bombarding and using the opponent tactically, not always trying to make them outballs.
    I was particularly interested in the ploy of winning by not going after a high score but, instead, making sure the opponents were nullified by sparking them out of the game.

    I think our Aussie teams can do a few things like keeping some balls off in the first couple of rounds, keeping tight to the line and tapping out balls onto the line to make it more difficult for strong opposition to knock us off. Then if we can make our shots we can definitely compete.

    I tried the Chinese sparking style this weekend with limited success but I will stick with it for a few weeks.

    • Tapping on tight was an important ingredient that enabled NSW Country to get a win against one of the Chinese teams. Playing red, tapping on the line and getting a couple of early points at Gate 2 gave the NSW team a base from which to snatch the game at the end. The Chinese team used held off balls far more effectively than NSW Country and gained control probably around the 10-15 min mark. Although the constant tap ons were attacked by the Chinese, they spent time attacking balls rather than racking up points. Eventually, they could not deal with all 5 balls on the line at some distance from each other. This provided opportunities for counter attack, ie a slide set up and a 3/4 cross court shot at a cluster. Both these attempts failed but a final opportunity to pass gate three, execute a short bombard and then score the goal pole cemented the win for NSW Country coming from one point behind.

      All Keith’s ingredients for success were illustrated in this game, and, if it were to be played again, NSW Country would have wished to use holdback more effectively, tapped on a bit tighter and been more accurate when opportunities presented themselves.

      I’ve often played in teams where other players don’t like to use hold back. Confidence can be dented! Can someone identify how hold back works ideally?

  286. These balls have been used by Southport CC in outdoor spaces such as bitumen, outdoor netball/basketball courts as well as undercover cement areas of schools. Use chalk to mark the gates and centre pole if no stand-up gates are available. It is very good to skills for when playing outdoor games because on cement or bitumen the balls for sparking need to be in touch or they will roll apart. On a wooden floor the would also be good for games.

  394. We had a croquet tournment in Toowoomba where the temperature reached 41 degrees. We put our sprinklers on and many of the players wet them selves under the sprinklers to cool off.

      We didn’t use any special rules for the tournament. High-low doubles play with alternating turns so if someone doesn’t make gate 1 their teammate will have the next attempt with that ball.

      In the training sessions however we did adjust game play to ensure the new players had plenty of chances to participate (move in gate 1, a second attempt after a sparking foul etc).

  401. Ball 5 touch ball 7, spark ball 7 close to ball 8.
    Ball 5 make Gate 2.
    Ball 5 stroke to hit ball 8 or 10, avoiding ball 7. If ball 5 touches either ball 8 or 10, spark that ball out at Line 1 next to Gate 3 then stroke to touch the other ball, then spark that ball out at Line 1 next to Gate 3. Then make Gate 3, then set up a slide touch for ball 7 to go to the goal pole. If no touch then the following is to occur, ball 6 is an agari, so therefore ball 7 is next to play.
    Ball 7 touch ball 8, spark ball 8 of the court at Line 1 next to Gate 3, then touch ball 10, spark ball 10 of the court at Line 1 next to Gate 3, then touch ball 5 and spark ball 5 through Gate 3, then stroke ball 7 to hit the Goal Pole.
    Balls 8, 9, 10 and 1 are all outballs, score at that point in time of the game is 16 – 11. If time permits, probably unlikely though, quickly stroke ball 8 to set-up gate and touch at Gate 2 for ball 2, ball 9 stroke diagonallyt to corner 4 using your full 10 seconds to stroke the ball, don’t hit the ball too hard, however the ball must go out, if ball 2 has a gate and touch opportunity with ball 8 then quickly stroke ball 10 to a position as a feeder from ball 8 to Gate 3, however if there is no gate and touch then quickly stroke ball 10 for a gate and touch opportunity for ball 2. If time permits, probably unlikely though, stroke ball 1 to the furtherst point on the court so that ball 1 is an outball using your full 10 seconds to stroke the ball, don’t hit the ball too hard, however the ball must go out. If there is a gate and touch opportunity with ball 8 make Gate 2 touching ball 8, spark ball 8 through Gate 3, then with your first of your two continuing shots stroke to set-up a slide touch of ball 10, then perform slide touch of ball 10 with your second continuing stroke, then spark ball 10 through Gate 3 deep even out is fine but don’t compromise ball 4, then stroke ball 2 though Gate 3 either short or deep, if short then stroke to hit the goal pole [score would then be if all shots worked 16 – 17] if deep touch ball 4 and spark ball 4 through Gate 2, then stroke to hit the goal pole, if all sucessful then teh final score would be 16 – 18.

  402. The best possible scenario I believe to win the game is:

    Ball 5 touches Ball 7, and sparks over to Ball’s 8 and 10. Ball 5 could then make Gate 2, if too far of a distance, Ball 5 can position itself between Gate 3 and the Agari pole for Ball 7 to use after sparking off Balls 8 and 10 (sparking Ball 10 off however is not really required).

    If Ball 7 is good at slides, then make gate 2 with ball 5. Stroke ball 5 to set up a slide touch for ball 7.

    Slide touch ball 7 to near ball 8. Spark Ball 5 through gate 3.

    Slide ball 7 off ball 10 towards goal pole (don’t hit it!) and spark 10 out.
    Agari with ball 7.
    Probably then little time for any further shots.

    • We tried the puzzle at Lithgow today and red won 3 times.
      We hit 5 onto 7, sparked 7 near the goal pole, then hit 5 through gate 2. 5 then hit over to 8 and sparked 8 out. then hit 10 and sparked 10 out. 5 then went through gate 3. scores is now 14-11. twice 5 missed the goal pole after gate 3, but no problem as 6 was agari, so 7 played and hit the pole. end of turn, out of time. red won.

  405. Do NOT go straight for Gate2.
    Options depend on how good a shot are 5 & 7.
    Either, touch 7 so as to send it over to 8;
    or, build a bridge for 7 towards the centre and a slide touch onwards.

    • It did. It was Kerrie of Newcastle’s brainchild and has run for a few years now. What I think is great about it is that it gives less experienced players a variety of more experienced players to play with but people are not stuck with the same partner. It’s also a challenge for the more experienced.

      Our smaller number of NSW comps use a variety of formats that give host clubs the opportunity to encourage other players at their clubs to participate. Our next event is the Jamberoo triples at the end of May – do join us if you are down our way!

  408. Yes, Frances I have enjoyed the “puzzle” and reading the many answers. The consideration of players’ abilities always enters into the mind of the captain. Then, there is the time factor. Quick decision making by the captain, precise explanation to the player and then it is a hope by the captain that the player can follow the reasoning of what was required to do. Having puzzles like this on a white board would benefit players as they can ‘see’ tactics that they might not otherwise have been aware of. Thanks, Glen.

  411. While there have been some great answers, a question we always need to ask is whether our players have the skills to carry out the required moves. I’ve now seen 10 players carry out this scenario. One played red and the other played white. Red won 4 times and white once.

    The only player to successfully touch and spark ball 7 across to the two white balls at gate 3 was one of our more experienced players. A less experienced player saw the possibilities but the spark of 7 across to 8 fell short. White was then able to score with 8 and 10

    A player with only a couple of years experience, tried to run gate 2 with ball 5 and missed, they had a shot at the goal pole with 7 but missed that too. White then missed with both balls 8 and 10.

    Another player ran ball 5 through gate 2, had a shot at the pole with 7 and missed. When sparking ball 10 through gate 3, 8 managed to jaws it in the gate leaving no space for 8 to pass. Red one again.

    Another less experienced player went back for 7 and sparked it to the goal pole. They then passed gate 2 with 5 and, on the next turn made the goal pole with 7. White did not manage to spark 10 through gate 3 but did pass with 8. The goal pole was missed however.

    My conclusion from all of this is that the scenario is great. It was really good for a range of players to think it out and try it out. The discussion that took place between players was valuable and it was an opportunity for those with experience to keep quiet and let others learn.

    I’d urge others to try the scenarios out with a range of players and report what happened. I’d be interested to hear.

    • We tried a few times at Newcastle…first player wanted to go for gate first but failed. Next attempt player missed the touch with 5 onto 7.
      Next attempt touched but spark fell short and 7 didn’t touch 8. Another attempt did get the sparked ball over but then with touch on 8 …8 went out.
      So white won all the time except for our last try and red did succeed but we did move the ball placements to better positions…maybe we had them all too close to the line and too far apart to start with.

    We have played this scenario a couple of times with our usual range of abilities. Both times, red won. Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush?

    On the first attempt red 3 took a shot at the white balls near gate 3, missed and went out! By the end of the game 1 missed gate 3 from nearby and all 2 had to do was hit the goal pole from half a metre. It missed and won.

    On the second occasion, 3 went back as a pivot for 9 and as that succeeded red managed to stay ahead and win!

  418. I think I’d prefer to play White.

    The best play for ball 3 is to be put in a position for 9 to touch after coming on. This is probably a little straighter than the normal “for 9 coming on” position as the powerful play is simply the spark of 3 with 9. 10 is coming on and 2 is over near gate 3. Neither of those two balls is likely to be able to respond to Ball 3’s new position.

    However, White has two gate touches for the taking. The most pivotal play is probably ball 6.

    Ball 6 should abuse ball 1 and set a Gate-Touch for ball 8. Ball 6 touches ball 1, sends one as a straightener for 8, 6 sits behind as the touch ball. Since ball 7 is out there is no chance ball 1 gets rescued.

    The more obvious gate touch is probably for Ball 2. Ball 4 can attempt to sit in the jaws of gate 3 or just behind. The gate touch for ball 2 is more obvious, but actually probably harder to execute.

    If 8 gets the Gate and Touch, 8 puts 6 back in the position at gate 2, then takes 3 off the court. That robs red of ball 3 and leaves ball 2 with a possible gate-touch against 4, but with a definite 2-4 touch with 3 as an outball.

    If I had a strong team, I’d prefer to play white… The shots are tricky, but the positioning is stronger.

  421. Ok – I’ll go first, even though when faced with a similar position at the Vic Champs vs Canberra everything went horribly wrong. Still, that’s how you learn….

    Staying all off is clearly a legitimate tactic at this point. Unless I had exceptionally good players I think staying all off (or at least leaving 5 and 7 stay off) is a good move.

    There’s two very dangerous outcomes for Red from here. One is that 2 touches 4 and sends 4 to 5. So wherever 5 is put, 4 can reach it. The other risk is arguably worse. 2 touches 4, then 2 passes gate 2, then sets a gate touch for ball 4.

    The more aggressive approach for Red is for 5 to stay off, 7 and 9 to collect at corner 1 (? – the corner just to your right when you’re at the start box…the lower right in the diagram). But the key play is for 1 and 3. At the start of round 2, ball 1 comes on then moves about 50cm towards gate 2, staying as a pivot ball for 3. That way, 2 is forced to set a very protected gate touch for 4, or to vacate the area entirely. If not, 3 can put 1 near the line equal with the gate (leaving 4 with the option of the gate or the ball, but not both).

    If you have a player playing 5 who has a strong chance (by which I mean 75% or so) of making gate 1 and gate 2 straight away, then that tactic is legitimate. Ball 5 makes gate 1, then gate 2 then sits near gate 3. This is a high-risk and high-return strategy. If it doesn’t work it can go horribly wrong. (See Vic Champs game mentioned above.)

  422. Good explanation, Philip. I think this is more challenging as there is no “right” answer and so much depends on individual skills. Will play it out and see what happens. Interested to hear from others.

  423. Totally agree with Phillip. I’d be inclined to keep 5, 7, and 9 off for the first round.

    I’d then set No. 1 up as the pivot ball for No. 3, and then once No. 3 has used No. 1, I’d then re-spark No. 1 to be another pivot ball for No. 5. No. 3 would then either attack the white balls, or score the gate, with the intention of hiding somewhere in an attacking position to score Gate 3 on its final shot.

    I would have countered with setting ball 4 as a bridge between 10 and Gate 2 (incidentally, that’s what actually happened in the game). Ball 4 would hopefully be equal with the gate, about 1 foot, maybe 2, from the line. Ball 6 thus has access to the front of the gate (and maybe Ball 3 if you don’t manage to hide it properly).

    There’s a slight risk that 5 could come down the whole line of balls, but it’s tricky.

    Peter – I’m not sure if you’re trying to be sarcastic, but the prospects of successfully completing that shot are effectively nil…

  438. Once again we tried this out.

    The first time we played, red attempted to spark 1 close to corner 4 but within touching distance of 2. Unfortunately 2 was too far out from the line and was an easy pickoff for 10 when 6 sparked it over. White won by a big margin.

    On a second attempt, 1 and 3 retreated to defensive positions on line 4 beside gate 3. When 6 attempted to spark 10 across, the spark was too hard and 10 became an outball near gate 3. Red won by a small margin at the end of this game.

  439. Philip – it was a serious suggestion, since your positioning of 1 & 3 seemed perfect for a glance shot. Now that I’m back in Canb I tried it this arvo, and you are correct that getting close enough to 6 & 10 is too difficult. In 4 attempts I missed 1 completely, and the other three shots had 3 about 10-12′ out from 6 & 10 = too far to risk with them tight on the boundary. I opted for Plan B (as set out in my answer above), and retired to position in front of H2 (although I now see that this might need to be further out if 6 bridges for 10).

    Thanks for the reply. It was hard to convey on the chart, but the glance shot was not really an option. Ball 1 was about 125cm from Ball 3. Close enough for a very reliable touch but too far to reliably use a slide/glance shot.

    The other difficulty with hiding Ball 3 near Gate 2 is that Ball 2 has a moderate prospect of a gate touch. From memory, I think Ball 2 managed a gate touch in this game because Ball 6 sent Ball 10 to Balls 1 and 2 together. Ball 10 then sent Ball 1 off the court and sent Ball 2 to the scoring side of Gate 3, before attempting a long range gate itself. Ball 10 clanged and ended up in the jaws, creating the gate touch for Ball 2.

    Interesting to hear that White won convincingly when Red sent Ball 1 to Ball 2. That was the exact choice and result in the game this example is drawn from.

  444. That sounds as if you had a great time. One question, could you tell me the length of the artificial lawn, that you played on. We tried this in New Zealand, and found the very short grass was very hard to spark on, the ball slipping away from the foot.

    However, there are some minor errors, and some suggested changes and several rule references are incorrect. As it is not in an editable format, therefore i’m unable to correct.

    If John Swabey is prepared to provide me with an editable document I can make the required changes in red font and forward back to him. In its current format, as an International Referee in Australia I do not recommend that it be available for use in Australia.

  505. The level 2 materials look very good. Thanks to John and all who helped draft them.

    On reading them again I did notice that perhaps the tactics of bombarding (rather than the skill) deserve a few sentences?

    For example:

    Using Touched Opposition Balls

    Touching an opposition ball is a huge benefit to your team. There are three main tactics to use after touching an opposition ball.

    Tactic: Spark the opposition ball out of bounds immediately.

    This is beneficial to the team and relatively easy to execute. Consider the placement of where the out-ball will play from. It’s often best to scatter the opponents balls and leave them well away from gates they wish to be near and well away from other balls near them in the playing order.

    Tactic: Bombard an opposition ball

    Deliberately sparking the touched ball straight at a second opposition ball is called bombarding. When successful, both opposition balls are knocked out of bounds. This doubles the benefit to the team.

    However, bombarding is not without risks. The extra power required increases the risk of fouling on the spark (as might a call of 8 seconds during the lining up). The second risk is that a missed bombard will put the outball very near the target ball. The out-ball can then come on and provide a rush to the original target ball. Be aware of playing order when bombarding, particularly when undertaking long-distance, low-percentage bombards.

    Tactic: Use the opposition ball

    When in a dominant position, touched Opposition balls can be used to the benefit of your own team, before being put out of bounds at a later stage. The most common use would be either as a “straightener” for a ball in front of a gate, or a behind-the-gate ball for use as part of a gate touch. Remember to pay close attention to the order of balls and whether there are any “live” opposition balls to play before the captured opposition ball will be sparked out.

    • Phillip’s explanations are excellent and very constructive. It would be good to incorporate these three tasks in the Level 2 Skills Cards.

  510. The game of Triples has been a good success since being introduced by Southport Croquet Club in 2012. The requirement to play two balls for two of the team and one player plays just one ball speeds up the involvement of each team member. Nothing beats skilful play accompanied by good tactics.     • I’d also send 5 to gate 3, but – since 4 will spark 6 across to gate 2 and so threaten 1 unless its very tight to the line – I’d then try and run gate 2 with 1 to near the back line so that I could shoot at 6 (and to gate 3 if I miss – if unhappy about 4 red balls at gate 3, shoot through 4 to the corner). If short after gate 2, shoot through 6 to the corner.

  521. I would touch 5 and put it into a deep position tight to the line near gate 2 (out of reach of ball 2) and then shoot at gate 2 deep. If successful I would have a long shot across the court through ball 6.

    I am fearful that 4 could reach gate 3 after ball 2 comes over to help and adding 5 to the balls at gate 3 could result in all the red balls ending up off the court.

    Over in Eastern Australia-Sydney (at Strathfield Croquet Club) I recently held a 3 week course for U3A, titled -‘The two G’s of Croquet-Golf Croquet and Gateball’. The course was received well. I had approximately 6 players at each session, and of that group three have joined the club, and one player plans to join in Spring.

    I also conduct a school croquet program. Whilst Golf Croquet is the first game that the high school students learn, towards the end of term, I will set some GB challenges ( to get students familar with GB equipment; show students how well the skills transfer; that the strokes are similar; some new skills are involved; and will get students familar with the basics of the game). This experience will also challenge those students who have returned to our club over several terms, and as they are more experienced player, I will get them helping us with the more inexperienced student player (a learning experience for all at different levels).

    • Hi Ruth. Plenty of coaching sessions by you to spread the golf and Gateball experience to the younger players as well as to adults. Good work. One game that is worth considering is called “G-Ball” I developed the concepts from doing the After School program many years ago. It is simple actually. Use Gateball sticks and balls to play Golf Croquet around a normal Croquet court. Player 1 uses balls 1 and 3 (red Balls) from the Gateball set of 10 balls while player 2 uses balls 2 and 4 (white balls) . Or, it can be played as doubles. Then balls 5,7 play against 6 and 8 to create a second game. No worries about colour blindness. Number sequence means there is very little chance of wrong ball order and the smaller balls go through croquet hoops very easily. Best wishes. Barbara

  525. You are really doing a wonderful thing in introducing Gateball to players in Western Australia. It is so compatible with the other codes. As for schools, yes do continue. We have had the private schoolboys in a select P.E.Class from The Southport School spend 4 weeks on Gateball. Thes e rugby playing boys found it challenging sometimes but enjoyed it.

  557. This is a very true assessment of playing Gateball in Tokyo or any area in Japan. Visitors are warmly welcomed and showered with hospitality. Countless visits to many places from Tokyo to Toyota to Matsumoto to Nagoya etc , from Indoor, dirt surfaces to artificial surfaces, we have found there will be a group of people so happy to welcome visitors to play Gateball. We had regular weekend games at The Olympic Park venue when I worked in Tokyo since it was close to where our son lived. So many people are now discovering how great Japan is as a tourist place, I hope they take their Gateball sticks as well as their essential items.

I borrowed that line myself after my recent appearance in the Makara GC handicap doubles at Sutherland, as I am a relative newcomer to competition. Good on your family for giving yourselves that overall experience, and less focus on where you were placed. It is good to be reminded of that.

  562. Should have commented about the non playing strategist captain. That person was probably technically the manager – they seem to fulfill a coach role. Its a bit confusing for an Aussie!
    In relation to laser pointers, there was some discussion at the WGU rules meeting last year about using laser pointers. A problem for Australia is that laser pointers with enough power to mark a spot on a lawn in full daylight are not legal in Australia – do you remember an incident when someone shone one at the cockpit of a passenger plane a few years ago. The Australian Government reacted by banning higher powered lasers. I ge that impression that the issue will not be pursued by the WGU. An argument that the CGA made for using lasers was that it would make their coaches much quieter as they would not have to use their complicated grid reference system to descibe positions on court!

  567. This was a very good representation of players. It was good to see the composite teams that provide experience and opportunity to play at a good level of competition.   570. When l was playing in a game in Toowoomba l went through the 3 gates in three turns and l did not try for Agari as it was part of a game and l was number 1 player at the start of a game. Great effort Peter.

  572. I remember a similar situation. Had hugged line 2 with ball 1. Came through gate 2 with the second turn. Two white balls behind gate 3 were too muçh of a temptation so had a go and scored that. Sparked out one white ball and then got too cocky. The other white ball was just in front and I thought I could slide off it and take out the pivot ball white had set behind gate 1. Trouble was my ball jumped and hit the goal pole! This was only the second round and the following team gradually overtook us by fully exploiting the use of 10 and 2 as successive balls.

  580. Well done to all concerned. I hope the game takes off at Nowra as it is gradually doing at Strathfield. I conduct two senior sessions during Seniors Festival Period, and for the first time, I am introducing Gateball into the Second Session. I have invited participants from the first Session to also attend the Second one, and many have accepted to do so…thus both GC and GB will give Seniors an idea of the variety of games our club offers. What is particularly pleasing is that some SCC volunteers who were not assigned to come to the second session, are doing so, as they would like to understand more about GB, and have fun as they did in the first session.

    Jambaroo Gateballers impressed me on each of my two visits to Jambaroo, so I know how lucky Nowra is, to have the expertise of Gateballers like Glenda, Manuel and Co.

It is disappointing to see Gateball being played as a “half”member game.By this I mean two people per team.The dynamics of a five player team largely dissolves when you use 2 people.No wonder there were fewer people attending.The gateball sport looks more and more like croquet,with it’s doubles pairings.With a croquet competition being played simultaneously in NSW there was little to distinguish between the two sports other than rules.What would futsal (indoor soccer) be with 2 players?What would basketball be with two players. What would gateball be with two players?All games would be less dynamic,less dramatic and ultimately boring.
    To the administrators of the games in the future:Please keep the original 5 player teams in future competitions .If you want more referees then force players to be referees during practice sessions.If there are eleven players for a practice session then one is the referee,picked by lot.Always try to play 5 player teams in practice.Just because you have two courts (and now three)available it doesn’t mean you have to use them simultaneously .You are only watering down the true spirit of the sport.
    Gateball is not a younger brother to croquet.
    Another point I will bring up is the ball number each player plays should remain the same during a game to avoid the unavoidable result of confusion if ball rotation is used.
    I will publish my name within this email as I am not afraid to hide it.

    • You are obviously unaware that Doubles competitions are played frequently within Australia and across the world, and I would hate to hear your opinion of the Singles format. Comments like yours are not necessary to the game of Gateball within Australia, and I would like to commend John and the Lithgow competition for remaining resilient and creative with their organisation and structure; it is always a warming and welcoming atmosphere. My father and I will aim to hopefully make an appearance for the 10th anniversary of this competition.
      Hope all is well in the Blue Mountains.

  587. I would like to fully endorse Barbara’s comments with regard to the Thai Championships which, as always, was played in a great atmosphere of friendliness and sportsmanship.
    This was my fourth participation in the Team Event, playing again under the name of ‘Gateball Friends’, but the first in which I also played in the Doubles event with my daughter, Nina.
    In one of our Doubles games I ran gate 2, when suddenly the referee called a foul, saying I had played ‘out of turn’, much to the surprise of all 4 players.
    The referee believed that Nina should have played my shot, and yet all 4 players agreed that Nina had played the shot before for us.
    Following long discussion with the Tournament referee I was awarded the gate and continued to play.
    So my question is …… IF it is found that the A,B,C,D sequence is no longer being followed for some reason, at which point is a foul called and how far do you go back to correct it?
    A follow up question ……. If the next ball to play for A in sequence should be out for Agari, say 7, should A or C then play 9 ?

  590. Thanks Barbara. GB rules require these but they have not been regularly worn in Australia. ACA funding allowed the purchase of a set of these for each state. Please note there are armbands for linespeople too. They are part of the refereeing team and can assist the referees by making calls – means less moving about for the refs too! Maybe clubs can organise captains armbands? The I D card holder for the referee sets were ordered through Ebay and are easily available. If any club does this, please choose different colours from the referee sets! Clubs are of course welcome to make their own sets for refereeing but please use the same colour armbands as the sets sent to your state. The template for the roles can be sent and will eventually be posted as a downloadable link on the website.

    • Excellent! If you can’t quite get to a full team, that’s not a concern. We’re likely to have a few extras and spares. November/December is a lovely time of year to be in Melbourne.

  601. There is a section in the rule book about referee errors p62. One of the situations described is when the ref makes an error but the next player is called and plays. In that situation the game continues as if the error did not happen. Often, in social play with no ref, players have suddenly noted that even though white plays ball 2, red thinks it is ball one’s turn. How do people resolve this problem and try to avoid it happening?

  603. Three questions posed by Barbara and Jim Northcott:

    Question 1 – After the players’ equipment and clothing have been inspected before the start of a game, the weather suddenly deteriorates during the game and it starts to rain. Is the game forfeited if the players then wear wet weather clothing that doesn’t match?

    Question 2 – Equipment was inspected by the referees prior to the game commencing. During the game a stick breaks and the player does not have a stick that has been inspected. What does the player do?

    Question 3 – A referee who is positioned in the stroking direction mistakenly stops, on the inner field, a ball that looks as though it will be entering the outer field. Is this an in-ball? If a player does this what happens?

I along with the rest of the Pine Rivers Team had a great time (except for the bloody weather) the competition was played in a friendly although competitive manner, we as a small gateball club learnt a lot about strategy during the competition and I personally learnt that captaining a side is not as easy as I though it was ! but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to have another go.

  689. In my opinion the three days of Gateball were outstanding.

    One of the thing that stands out for me was when we walked in the door every morning we were greeted by so many smiling faces and always felt welcome and part of this Gateball Community. On the courts all games were played in very good spirit, with as much friendly ness at the beginning and end of each game as was extended to one and all in the clubhouse. Thank you Melbourne for a wonderful Australian Gateball Championship, you did the sport proud.

  690. Philip, you only hinted at the topic of being a host and continuing to play at the top level. That is indicative of the ‘can do’ attitude that you and others in the teams had demonstrated. It was an excellent, consistent team effort and sincere congratulations to all in the Kew team.

    • Thanks very much… My team told me in no uncertain terms that I was not to referee at any point during the tournament. So I was on scoreboard duties and having a rest…. That definitely helped me make it through.

  691. Australian Gateball Championships!
    The Korean Join team had a great experience in Australia.

    Our team had a number of incidents before this competition.
    In August, one player was absent, making it difficult to find a replacement.
    And I only had two exercises with the new member.
    In addition, one week before departure, one of our members was admitted to the hospital, and our team had to make a strategic decision.
    He was an important part of my team, so I and my team even thought about giving up on Australia.

    This was because it was hard to travel to Australia with two members who had been practicing for one year.
    In fact, my team had a lot of conflict before leaving the country a week before the departure.
    But for a month-long schedule with John Parker, I decided to travel to Australia.
    We had a hard time challenging the Australian championship with a hurried team, but thank you for completing this long Australian event.

The experience gained at these Championships is invaluable, with forward thinking and strategies which can only be seen at an event such as this. The teams from Korea and China and indeed all the teams were first class and we feel that the knowledge gained from exposure to such players will benefit us not only as team members, but in doubles matches. As always the friendliness and comradeship throughout the Gateball community is tremendous and as first timers to this event, we were blown away by the way in which we were received.   701. Oh dear. Sorry to hear Canberra has been hit by this after some bad smoke days recently.

    Those of us who play GB at Lithgow came through the fires OK. Several of us got out of the Blue Mountains area as advised but at least one was defending their home with a hose.

    Playing at Lithgow last Monday we can see burned hillsides all around.

    Let’s hope all clubs can get through the rest of the summer without any more climate induced disasters.

At the 2019 nationals we clarified what would happen in a situation like this and stated that players could don rain protection gear provided they still observed the 10 second rule for their individual play

    Q3 Page 63 17(iii) explains it all. Basically it stay where it is unless the ref makes a judgement that it was going out. In this case the ball is placed as an outball where the ref judged it would have become and out ball.

  735. A couple of sparking foul questions:

    1. After a successful spark, as the foot is removed from the stroker’s ball, the ball “wobbles” in place but does not move to a new position on the field. Is this a foul?

    2. After touching a ball, the stroker’s ball stops very close to another ball that has not been touched. The stroker sets the touched ball and completes a spark. The stroker’s ball moves under foot, but does not come out from under the foot, and strikes the untouched ball causing it to move. The stroker does not touch the untouched ball with either the foot or stick. What should the referee do?

    • My thoughts:

      The answer to question 1 is clear. The ball must move out from under the foot to be a foul (Article 16, Clause 4, 1 (2)). A wobble in place is not moving out from under the foot, there is no foul.

      Also, the rules specifically allow a movement under the foot. See Article 16, clause 2, Part 6. This reads
      “The following actions are proper plays: … the stroker’s ball moves underneath his/her foot.”

      Question 1 is clear – there is no foul, there is no action for the referee to take.

      Question 2 is much harder.
      There is no foul in question 2. The unclear bit is what to do in response.

      As noted above, the ball moving under the sparking foot is a proper play. However, we must bear in mind the next section of the rule, Article 16, Clause 2 6 (i) . This reads

      “When the stroker’s ball moves underneath his/her foot, and if this movement affects a play such as passing a gate, finishing, or making a Touch, the referee shall place the stroker’s ball back in it’s original position.”

      This rule is not utilised often. It is designed so that the stroker can’t gain advantage by rolling their ball slightly one way or the other during a spark. This matters mostly in tight spaces where the angle change can mean a lot. For example,the difference between a gate touch being available and not. While technically any change in position of a ball changes the subsequent shot, that is often immaterial. Being 6 metres or 5.99 metres from the next target doesn’t matter. But a couple of centimetres making a gate touch possible is clearly impacting the game.

      I would argue the spirit of this rule suggests that the answer to question 2 is that both the stroker’s ball and the previously untouched ball should be replaced back in their original positions. The stroker may then play their next shot.

      However, a literal reading of the rules suggests that the movement of the ball under the foot is a proper play. (16.2.6). And 11.1.1 says “all movements of balls as a result of proper plays are are valid moves”.

      Arguably this suggests that the stroker’s ball should be moved back, but the other ball should not. Compare this with Q41 in the FAQ book. There, a movement of a ball previously resting against a gate is deemed valid if the stroker’s sparking shot moves the gate and therefore the ball.

      If I were refereeing, I would move both balls back to their original positions. That is clearly the intent of the rules. But that’s just my view.

        • In the first situation (from a match at the Nationals), we followed the advice above.

          In the second situation we followed the arguably route above, and both balls were left in their finishing positions. The movement in the stroker’s ball did not affect a critical LaPlaya and so there was no reason to move it. In the rare case where the referee would need to move the stroker’s ball back (eg 2013 NSW state final where a ball moved away from the gate 3 leg) Iwould argue that the events are independent. The untouched ball is a valid move and so should stay where it finishes. The stroker’s ball is the one affecting play and should be moved back. Thanks for the analysis Philip.

  736. For Q1, I agree with Phillip.

    For Q2, this resembles the scenario in Q163 of the Q+A. It is a ball touch foul in the course of sparking. As in your scenario the spark is complete, the stroker’s ball becomes an outball. The ‘accidentally touched ball’ returns to its original position.

    I understand it is a ball touch foul as the stroker’s ball is touching another ball for a reason other than permitted in the game rules. I think part of the problem might be the English translation of the original Japanese rules. In some rules ‘touch’ is used as the verb, In others, ‘comes into contact’ is used.

    • I’ve just read Q163 of the FAQ and Gilon is right. Q163 clearly designates this as a ball-touch foul.

      Interestingly enough, I can’t find any mention of this sort of foul in the ball-touch section of the rule book… but as Gilon says, this may be a translation issue. My Japanese isn’t good enough to easily look this up, but the Japanese do have active and passive verbs – maybe that’s what’s going here. “Touch” is quite an active verb in English, it may not be in Japanese…

      • I remembered I had an old Japanese version of the rules in my drawer…..

        The Japanese verb used in the ball-touch foul section is sawaREru, not sawaru. Both verbs are translated in English as “touch”. But further investigation suggests that sawareru is a much gentler and occasionally abstract word, that can mean things like “brush against” or even “touch upon in conversation”.

        Notably, Japanese has a word for touching something physically and physically only. That verb is sawaru. That is NOT the verb used in the ball-touch foul section. They use the much more abstract sawareru. Hence maybe “ball-touch foul” should be read more as “ball-influence foul” or “ball-affecting foul” in English.

  737. I agree with Gilon. It is definitely a ball touch foul under sparking conditions. Clause 4.2(3) says – If a sparking foul takes place after a successful spark, and before the foot is moved away from the stroker’s ball: (i) A ball that has moved as the result of a sparking foul is returned to the position it was in before it moved. (ii) The strokers ball becomes an out-ball from the position where it stopped after the Touch.
    This is why I am a great fan of the Q & A Book as it often makes clear something which might not be so clear in the Rules Book

  738. Thanks to all for the excellent discussion. I confess that I haven’t really believed the “lost in translation” reading of the rules before, but Q163 really highlights this as an issue.
    The rules at 18.1.1 define a ball touch foul as “a stroker” touching a ball other than in accordance with the game rules. In Q163 it is movement of a ball under the stroker’s foot that causes the offence not the stroker. Contrast this with Q161, where a stroker’s possessions (glasses) cause a ball to move, resulting in an invalid move (which is clear from the rules).
    I must admit i don’t really understand why Q163 is a ball touch foul other than Philip’s explanation above.

    But, to the point, in the scenario posed, it is the action of the stroker striking the stroker’s ball (a proper play) that causes the untouched ball to be touched and move rather than movement of the stroker’s foot as in Q163. This takes me back to 11.1.1 “Aside from invalid moves, all movements of balls as a result of a proper play by a stroker shall be valid.”
    Does this make any difference to your answers?

  742. Yes, it was a rush to get a seat to watch the semi finals and the final. We were not experienced enough in pushing into a space to see the game so we viewed it through the gaps in the crowd. If you knew what field it was being held, you would go and take up a ‘spot’. Local knowledge and understanding the language would have been an advantage to ‘bag’ a spot. There were other exciting games also. One was when the Manager was expelled from the area by the Chief Referee. The volume of verbal interaction was very high and a stand off occurred. Eventually the Tournament Referee was brought down to defuse the situation. Barbara

  750. This corona virus is putting a dampener on all sports. We are holding the New Zealand Gateball Championships again in Palmerston North In early February and whether we can Compete against international players depends on the borders being opened and quarantine rules being relaxed.
    Nevertheless, I will be sending invitations and conditions of play to overseas Gateball organisations and it would be fantastic to welcome Australians back to this event.
    Gateball is making excellent progress in NZ and we are looking to instigate competitions and tournaments in Gateball hotspots.

    • Australia and India are playing each other in a test series in cricket right now. One game each. Sydney is where they play the next test. Whatever sport we play, it is always good to play people from other countries. We have been to the UK, Macao, China, South Korea and to Brazil to play in Gateball Championships. My husband and I are retired so we can travel to play. So, I hope people can come to the Gold Coast in Australia to play Gateball in September if the Covid 19 virus is not a problem.

  813. Situation: Player has touched a ball that has passed through Gate 3 and eligible for the goal pole. He then proceeds to spark it on to Goal Pole. Following the spark, the touched ‘other’ ball hits the goal pole and rebounds onto the players ball and touches it before stopping.

    I now refer you to Article 14 Finishing 1. (1) – the successful ‘finish’ of the touched other ball and Article 16 Spark Clause 3 Completions of Sparking 1. (2) and Clause 4 Sparking Foul 1. (6), – which takes precedence?

    Is it correct to state that the touched ‘other’ ball has finished once it touches goal pole and that the subsequent ‘foul’ on touching the sparking ball does not count?

    • Any ball which touches the goal pole and becomes Agari can perform no further valid moves. For the purposes of the game it has winked out of existence… This is clear from the FAQ book question 101, for example.

      14.1 takes precedence (it has occurred first chronologically).

      The touched ball is Agari, there is no foul, take your continuation stroke.

  816. Red is comfortably ahead with 5 minutes to go, so I would have put 1 to Gate 3 to take out 2 & 4, and 7 to 8 & 10 (6 is an outball, so safe). 5 can then give 3 a bridge out – and 3 can send 5 to wherever 6 goes or regain control of Gate 2. 7 gives 9 a bridge out after it cleans up 8 & 10.

    I have no idea what happened next – 5 missing 8? Hit 8 and sparking it put 7 out? Sparked 8 out OK but accidentally hit 7 when trying to bridge it to 2? I do like the sound track! peter

    I would do the following.

    5 touches 7, sends 7 to 8.
    5 touches 1, sends 1 to bridge between 10 and Goal Pole. (Allowing7 to go 8, 10, 1, Pole.)
    5 makes the long distance attempt to finish near 9, touching 9 if possible. 9 to gate 3 if successful.

    7 touches 8, 10 sends them out. Touches 1, and sends to gate 3, 7 finishes. 9 sends 5 to gate 3, then goes to gate 3 itself.

    Ball 1 puts 5 and 9 through gate 3, then has a kamikaze attempt at Ball 4.

    • It’s funny i came to the same conclusion as Philip in terms of what to do. Although I would have also considered putting ball 1 with ball 9 so that it could have a better angel to spark the 1 ball closer towards the enemy white balls at gate 3.

    • Thanks John. The video was first and the main idea was the what happened next. The scenario came about mainly to show all the ball positions.

      [confession time – I stuffed up the ball positions in the scenario – Ball 6 was actually an in ball on line 1 level with gate 2 and balls 3 and 9 were swapped. This explains why Ball 5 went after 8 and 10 and put 7 to gate 3 to get Ball 2. In the game Ball 6 made Gate 2 and narrowly missed a touch on Ball 1]
      I still think the scenario is a good illustration of the various options a captain has – Peter’s solution still allows Ball 1 to make Gate 2 but the shots are harder. Philip makes certain of the 2 points for Ball 7.

  822. Rotational Triples: In a competition game, this method presents the referees with the very difficult addition task of ensuring that players do not play out of turn. It’s a challenge for referees in doubles, but in triples it really requires a third referee to keep track of the rotational system. I favour the relational system for triples for this reason.
    Another advantage of relational triples is that the singles number player (5 or 6) can be used for the captain who then has additional time to concentrate on tactics.
    For social games, both systems are satisfactory.

    Hi all – just had this item sent to me and posting it for comment.

    When two balls are touched with the same ball, are we are supposed to spark the first touched ball first, and then the second touched ball next, unless the balls come to stop and are touching the players ball?

    > We always thought you could spark them in any order but something in the exam seemed to indicate this was not correct. Given that Gateball rules are always about the order that the play occurs (for example, a passing of a gate stays valid, despite the ball then causing a foul), it is not impossible that the order of play when two balls are touched would be the first touched ball is sparked and then the second touched ball is sparked. There does not appear to be a specific Clause that refers to the order of sparking, other than the exception when balls are touching.
    >
    > Clause 4.1.7 and 4.1.8 both refer to “the first touched ball” and other balls to be sparked. It could mean the ball that was “touched” first or the ball you pick up first, which is a different interpretation. It would be good to read the Japanese version of the rules to see what the interpretation is.
    >
    > The Q&A seems to refer to Ball A and Ball B being touched and sparked in that order, A then B.
    > The exception is where they all end up against the players ball and then you can move balls to another location so you can spark one of them first, then bring the next one back which is the circumstance in Clause 4.1.7.

    > 4.1.7 is shown in Q151 and relates to changing the order of the spark when the exception occurs and the balls all end up against the players ball.     • 1. Article 15 Clause 2.1(1) hints that the balls can be sparked in any order:
      Clause 2. Gaining the Right to Spark
      (1) If the stroker gains the right to spark a number of other balls,regardless of the order the balls were touched, all other balls can be sparked.

      More compelling for me is to consider the impact on other rules if you assume that balls must be sparked in the order they are touched. For example, if you assume that the balls must be sparked in the order they are touched, then it would not be possible to spark the second touched ball if the first touched ball becomes an out ball or agari. It is clear that this is not the case eg QA 105

      “The stroker gains the right for sparking after a
      successful Touch with two balls even if either of
      the touched balls becomes an out-ball, as long as
      the stroker’s ball and the other touched balls stop”
      Therefore I would argue that balls can be sparked in any order.
      2.
      3. Wouldn’t hurt

        • I agree entirely Geoff article 15 clause 2 explains the situation and the rights of the stroker to spark the balls in any order. I is also important to point out that it is impossible to spark a ball in the touch order if the first touched other ball is an out-ball.

          • Thanks for your feedback guys! The original question that started this was part of the Level 1 exam. The question solution was: After a successful touch with ball A and ball B, the strokers ball stops in contact with ball A and the stroker picks up ball B by mistake – this is a foul. It seemed to indicate that the stroker had to pick up ball A first because it was touched first.

            However, the feedback since indicates that either ball A and B can be sparked in any order as long as you spark the one you picked up to spark first. You can’t change the order once you have selected the ball to spark first, or a foul will occur.

  827. Thanks Ros – Just to confirm why a foul is the correct answer in the scenario above, and how this is consistent with balls can be sparked in any order.

    In the situation descried, the foul is by virtue of Article 16 Clause 4.1(9) “Any of the following plays by a stroker will be regarded as a sparking foul:
    (9) If the stroker’s own ball is in contact with the touched other ball and the stroker comes into contact with yet another touched ball”, so a slightly different scenario to the general “touching more than 1 ball in the same stroke” question.

    • We have been playing Gateball competitions since July 2020 after three months of restrictions. Great care was taken for many months to follow all precautions. Nowadays we are careful but still able to play outdoor sport. I am sorry that is not the case yet in most countries. Barbara

It was a brilliantly run comp and a great day was had by the Eildon Tartans (us) we were a new team, and two were new to the Eildon club but not to Gateball, the win against the Sweeties was our best and last game of the tournament, I was pleased with our improvement over the course of the event, once again a big WELL DONE to all concerned

  841. Ball 2 touches ball 1 very close to the inside line. The stroker sparks ball 1 out of the court. Ball 1 is outside the court before the stroker’s stick has glanced off Ball 2 and commits a ball touch foul on ball 5 which is about 15cm away.. What should the referee do?

    Would it make any difference if ball 2 had still been moving within the court?

    • The rules are clear that once Ball 1 is outside the court and an out-ball, the spark has been completed. See 16.3.1.3 on page 25 of the new rules. It reads “Completions of sparking. A successful Spark refers to the following: … (3) when the other sparked ball becomes an out-ball”

      Ball 1 is a “valid” out ball.

      The touch on Ball 5 is, to my thinking, a ball-touch foul. As such, a foul is called. Slightly counter-intuitively, although the spark has been completed, the “stroker’s actions on sparking” have NOT been completed.

      By clause 16.2.1 the “stroker’s actions on sparking refers to all actions after the point at which all the balls inside the inner field come to a stop following a successful touch, to the point when the stroker steps off his/her own ball following a successful spark.”

      Clearly the spark can be successful before the foot is removed, but the actions on sparking are not complete until after the foot is removed.

      Which means that article 18.1.4 applies. This reads “If a ball touch foul occurs during the stroker’s actions on sparking, the process outlined in Article 16 Clause 4 ‘Sparking Foul 2’ on sparking foul shall be followed”.

      I don’t know what the 2 means – I think it may be a typo or an out of date reference. But it seems clear that the rules say a ball touch foul committed with a foot still on a ball following a spark is a sparking foul, not a ball-touch foul.

      As such, Ball 5 is placed back where it was before the foul, Ball 2 is placed out of bounds. Ball 3 is then called.

      I’m assuming that you’ve made a small error in the second part of the question. “Would it make any difference if Ball 2 had still been moving within the court?” My word yes it makes a difference!!! I assume you mean if Ball 1 had been moving inside the court.

      My understanding is that if the Ball 1 was in the field of play and still moving (though it would have to be more than 10cm from Ball 2 by 16.3.1.1), the same outcome would apply. The spark is complete, so Ball 1 is left wherever it comes to a halt. Ball 2 is placed out of bounds and Ball 5 is moved back to where it was before the ball touch foul. Ball 3 is called.

    • There is a key assumption with this question that may make someone interpret it wrong in some instances. For the most part, I agree with Philip, but there is an issue. The question does not state that the ball was placed 10 cm from the inner field line from the point at which it went out. If the ball was not placed before the ball touch foul occurred then this is not a foul. The reason for this is that no foul can be committed during referee time and any such foul would be considered ineffective play. Please correct me if I’m wrong but as the question is worded there would be no penalty and the ball moved by the foot would be replaced and the stroker would continue to play with their continuous stroke gained from the successful spark. Rule 10 clause 1 defines what a play is and states that a foul is indeed a form of play albeit a turn-ending play. Clause 2.1 affirms my suspicions as discuses above that no play can be made during referee time.

I have been associated with him and Keith for going on towards 20 years and am fully aware of the time and effort he puts into the expansion of the game. He is always entitled to a room at my house when visiting Rockhampton and I have to put up with him bashing his computer at 4am in the morning.     The key element is to make sure ball 2 touches ball the red balls. Ball 10 should be placed with that in mind. There are a couple of possibilities. However, placing 10 just beyond ball 8 may be the right choice. This allows 2 to touch 8 (back to 6) and then set a nice rush towards ball 3 (10 back to 6). Touch 3, out, touch 5, out.

    2 on pole. (2 points)

    4 near 6.

    6 sparks all balls through 3 (3 points).

    Then 6 at pole (2 points).

    7 extra points for white leads to a clear victory.

    Then it’s about white scoring points.

    bridging ball 2 to ball 5. Then with 5, you have a choice. A mid-court bombard of 3 may work – if there is no accidental peg out. A touch of 3 is ideal – but may be hard to achieve.

      • Pretty much spot on Philip. In the game, 2 touched 8 but the spark was short and ended up near the gate leg. The rush off ball 10 was to ball 5 so 10 could be sparked through gate 3. 5 was used to bombard 3 off the court and finished with agari (3 points from that turn). Ball 4 set up to the right of 6 and a small rush with ball 6 towards the pole allowed ball 4 to be sparked through gate 3 [balls 3 and 5 were out-balls] and 6 also made agari (another 3 points). The game finished with a white win 17-18.

  875. Pine Rivers would like to congratulate Caloundra on a wonderful tournament. With 12 teams in all I feel the tournament ran very smoothly. There seem to be some weary folks at the end of each day and some looking slightly redder then they started out. All matches were played in good spirit, and most left the fields smiling.

  885. I will never forget at my first Gateball Triples Competition, first competition away from home, at Jamberoo 2017, I think it was. Clare quietly came up to me after our first game (we had done badly), she had been watching…(I couldn’t get through gate one)…and she whispered to me “Don’t rush…you have 10 seconds, use them” – what a special woman she was. What good advice for a panicky newbie! She will always be admired and remembered by me…rest in peace Clare…I will forever admire you.

  886. It all started back in 1996 when Japan wanted to introduce Gateball to western countries in the region. The then Croquet Players Association of NSW was approached & Clare along with other interested players started to learn Gateball. They did this by watching a video sent from Japan. Understanding & following that video was made difficult because the video instruction was in Japanese.
    This group of players persevered & in 1998, 2 teams including Clare represented Australia at the World Gateball Championship held in Hawaii. This was the first time Australia had played in this Championship.
    Clare has also represented Australia at the World Gateball Championship in South Korea, Japan, China & Thailand. A true International Gateball player.
    Clare has always promoted Gateball going around to different Croquet Clubs demonstrating the game. She has been a mentor to many players being very generous with her knowledge & explaining tactics. Clare has always been very supportive and those of us who benefited from her experience, appreciated it.
    Clare also played Association & Golf Croquet. I natural talent with the mallet. Clare held different committee positions at the Epping Croquet Club including President and was a ‘Life Member’ of the club.
    Clare will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

  892. I first met Clare and Ken at the 2005 National Gateball Championship held at Mosman Croquet Club in November 2005. Saw them many times at the National Championships around different States [Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales] within Australia, the NSW State Championship as well and on occasions when venturing to Queensland at the CAQ Championship.

    Clare had a very strong and keen interest in Gateball, very willing to assist anybody with advice on how to play Gateball, on the tactics of the game and generous with her knowledge. Always kind and made a big impact and contribution. Clare was highly regarded amongst the Gateball community in Australia and whoever she met. Clare was a special lady, a lady in the true sense.

    It was a shock to hear the unexpected news and a sad day for Gateball not just in Australia but in the whole Gateball Community.

    Please accept my sincerity, sympathy and condolences on the passing of Clare Poole. Wishing family members all the best in this time of grief. May you remember all happy and special memories of Clare.

We are so sorry not to be there but despite all the enthusiasm we all had when Keith McCleod told us all about it, when participating at our own Championship way back in 2019, many things have come to pass.     • I must admit Warren…while we didn’t attend…on video the lawns did look a ‘little poor’ to say the least. To be fair though, there has been a lot of rain all over, which would have made it difficult to get the lawns tip top. We really didn’t expect the comp to be run…due to flooding etc.Glad it was. The sport of Gateball has suffered through COVID, just as much an many other sports. Looking forward to 2023.

  903. Whilst I agree the condition of the courts are not what some people are used to playing on, however, you need to be able to adapt.

    The court surface was the same for everyone, it was equal for all players, no disadvantage or advantage to others

    I could not agree more with the comment by Edward Rourke. Very succinct, straight to the point and very true.

    Players who complain or who could not adjust to the condition of the court at GCPC, in my opinion have automatically disqualified themselves from being considered to attend a World Gateball Championship in the future.

    Gateball can be played on any surface, you need the ability to adjust not complain about it.

  907. Question about ‘Gate touch’ where the ball passing through the gate subsequently touches 2 balls. I thought I had read that the striker gains 3 strokes after sparking but can’t find any reference in the rules.

    • Hi Margart,

      Hope you are well. The simple answer to your question is no. You do not gain 3 strokes from making a pass touch or touch pass and 2 balls being touched in the same stroke by the stokers ball. In Gateball there is only one valid way of gaining 3 continuous strokes which involves making 2 pass touches or touch passes in a row with he first shot after the first instance. For example: Ball 1 makes a pass touch trough gate 2 then after the successful spark in the first continuous stroke makes another pass touch through gate 3. After the successfully spark of the ball touched at gate 3 then the stroker would be allowed 3 continuous strokes

    • Hi Margart

      Anthony is right – the only way to get three strokes now is to gate/touch through both gates 2 and 3 in the same turn without using the first extra shot.

      However, a long time ago, you could win two shots by touching two balls in the same stroke. They removed that part of the rules in about 2014 or so.

      So it’s quite possible that a very old version of the Q+A manual would have a question like “What happens if you pass a gate and touch two balls in the same stroke?” And the answer may well have been “You get three shots, one for the gate and one for each of the touches, upon completion of the sparks.” So that would be my guess as to where you read it.

      But that is an obsolete rule. It no longer applies.

Another great event by Southport Club, it was a very competitive, yet friendly weekend, as Qld Gateball Coordinator I was impressed with the organisation, and running of the event,in spite of the doubles suffering from a lack of available referees etc, the doubles went relatively smoothly with some very competetive and watchable games on view. A very well done to all the numourous volunteers, without which these events would struggle to be as enjoyable as they are.

    It covered the basics plus additional skill based tasks.
    Problem solving situations were presented – just what you encounter on the lawns and exactly what the captain has to deal with.
    I learnt a lot, as did the other people, fortunate enough to attend.

  948. Thank you for this article which has a wonderful stories from a cross-section of players from many states. As a very strong advocate of the playing of all four codes of Croquet for me, personally, and at Southport Croquet Club, the news item should be republished in croquet news for all states.

  949. A late addition to the stories: In 2015 Barry Jenning was the greenkeeper at Meningie Bowling Club, SA. He was charged with preparing the old bowling green for the croquet club. He was persuaded to pick up a mallet & so started his croquet journey. When Barry Haydon came to give a coaching session about 6 months later, he posed the question of how far he could go in the sport & how he could get there. The offer to play at Hyde Park saw him travel to Adelaide regularly, stopping off at Murray Bridge to play on his way back to Meningie. He eventually moved to Adelaide & once he started competing at a higher level, soon realised that his toughest opposition all played AC so, when offered a chance of a 1 on 1 session with Eileen Ferguson as part of the country week carnival, he jumped at the opportunity. That was about 2017.

    The next year he was introduced to Gateball by John & Penny Park & has been playing all 3 codes ever since.

    His week usually involves GC on 4 or 5 days. AC on 3 days & gateball 1 or 2 days.

    People often ask which code he enjoys most and tells us he really doesn’t have a preference as each require both similar & very different skills Each code compliments the others.

    He has travelled through many parts of the country competing in all codes & to NZ to play AC & GC, he competed in the world championship of AC in 2020 and has played gateball in China. He has been in the GC state team each year since 2017 & last year made the AC state team.

    He enjoy the tactical challenges of GC, the finesse required to excel in AC & the precise touch required while trying to think at a million miles an hour in Gateball.

    Most of all, I enjoy the comradery in all codes.
