At the 2015 Australian Gateball Championship Gateball Australia’s previous National Director, Gilon Smith, was thanked for his contribution to the game and presented with a caricature drawn by Gateball’s Frances Wregg.
Gilon’s steady hand and unruffled manner will be missed in the national role. We will no doubt be calling on his advice and will continue to value his clear and analytic thinking.
The picture shows Gilon taking a swing to the accompaniment of raucous catcalls from some of his Canberra teammates.
The Canberra players included in the Caricature “in real life”. Can you guess who is who?
Gateballers from Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria have arrived in Melbourne for the Victorian Gateball Championship. Seven teams will compete for the teams trophy on 2 May while 14 pairs will compete for the doubles championship on 3 May.

Good luck to all participants.
Canberra were the victors winning 5 of their 6 matches all by very close margins. The South East Queensland Cougars finished second with four wins and a positive 16 net points.
Sunday doubles: Congratulations to David and Gareth Hughes from Queensland on winning the doubles competition. They almost recorded a perfect game in the final defeating Glen and Kristina Whitehead from Canberra 23-10.
David and Gareth not only dazzled us with their gateball but also with their virulent fluoro orange shirts. These were souvenirs of a 2014 Qld Gateballers Cruise. They even told us that there is another cruise boat that has a croquet lawn on board.
