Tamborine and youngsters shine at MSOB 2013

With beautiful winter weather Southport celebrated the start of the MSOB with a competition for gateball teams followed by gateball doubles. So many of the team events were closely contested with teams locked in a draw that ultimately had to be decided on a count back. With flat smooth surfaces all the balls needed to be stroked accurately into the best positions. Sometimes just centimetres separated success from defeat in the whole game because of ball placement. It was so good to see an increase to five in the number of young players competing in the teams event.

The results were: 1st place – Tamborine Mountain; 2nd place – Southport; 3rd place – Ipswich.

Perfect weather conditions were the order of the weekend when players from seven teams gathered at the Southport Croquet Club on the 22nd-23^rd of June 2013 for the annual “Mallet Sports on the Broadwater”.

Although the event was not attended by the Japanese visitors that we regularly see at this tournament, people from as far as the Blue Mountains came to enjoy some very exciting gateball matches.

The event was won by the Tamborine Mountain Raptors who managed to go through the competition with only one loss. Southport and Ipswich tied for second place with four wins from their six games but the superior net points allowed Southport to claim the honours for second with Ipswich third.

At this stage of the competition sees Tamborine Mountain Raptors leading the championship with a percentage rate of 76%. Second is Ipswich with a score of 68.18% and Toowoomba third with a score of 60%.

Next round of the Queensland Gateball Teams Challenge will be once again at the Southport club where they play host to the Queensland State Gateball Championship over the weekend on 17-18 August 2013.

Gateball arrives in Tamborine Mountain

Gateball was launched at Tamborine Mountain, in the Gold Coast hinterland, on Saturday 19 September 2009. The Tamborine Mountain Croquet Club held a “Come and See Day” to introduce Gateball to the local community.

Teams from Broadbeach, Southport and Ipswich shared their time and skills to demonstrate the game and explain the basics to local visitors. Many of these visitors also participated in games mentored by experienced players. We were also fortunate to have three experienced players from Rockhampton who now reside locally and hopefully will be able to play with the Tamborine group. Bruce McAlister, the State Director for Gateball was also able to attend and offered support for the fledgling club.

As well as the visiting teams the local Member for the Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC), Councillor Derek Swanborough attended and participated in two games. The Tamborine Mountain Croquet Club received a grant from the SRRC to purchase some Gateball equipment for which they thank the Council.

The weather was perfect, the assistance from all visiting players was fantastic, the camerardie that pervades this sport was evident and, all in all, a fantastic day was had by all. Some of the local visitors have expressed an interest in participating in Gateball and others that we have spoken with, who could not attend the day, have also expressed interest.
