Sue Bertram presents Caloundra Shield to Southport

On Saturday 7th  and Sunday 8th November eight teams competed at Caloundra for the Caloundra Shield. Dodging the stormy weather and the showers, the competitors experienced very hot temperatures and some nuisance rain. The final match scheduled for Saturday did not go ahead because of the close proximity of a storm so it was played on Sunday morning. The events were completed by late morning and so allowed the Doubles Competition to proceed.

With six wins out of seven games, Southport won the Shield for the second year in a row. Placed second was Caloundra with 4 wins.  Sue Bertram, the President of Caloundra made the presentation to the team. Christopher Wentworth captained the Southport team while on crutches. He suffered a broken bone in a school sporting accident playing Rugby! His mobility around the court using the crutches was amazing.

Since this was the final Tournament for QLD Gateball teams, the results had to be tallied up for the Suzuki Cup which is awarded to the tam with the most consistent results . To be in contention for the Cup, five tournaments must be played out of the 7 that are held throughout the year. With a score of almost 75%, Southport won the Suzuki Cup for the second year in a row. Second placed was Eildon with 53%. In third place was Toowoomba. View the Suzuki Cup results here.

Caloundra Club members were very hospitable with plenty of delicious morning and afternoon teas plus very nutritious sandwiches and fruit. The lawns were in very good condition. It was very good that players came from as far north as Rockhampton and as far west as Toowoomba to participate in the final competition for 2015.

There were eight Doubles Teams playing on the Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. The winning combination came from Mcilwraith Club. Philip Rowland combined with his team mate Alan to win every game except for one. Second place went to Lee Wentworth (Southport) playing with Gareth Hughes (Tamborine Mt).
