Review of 2010 Gateball World Championship

The previous World Gateball Championship was held four years ago in Shanghai, China.

With over 600 competitors and 108 referees the 2010 World Gateball Championship was far from the largest gateball tournament by participants but it was certainly the best resourced and most extravagant gateball tournament ever. Highlights included:

  • Custom built venue with 12 perfectly manicured grass and 6 artificial grass courts
  • A Gateball Museum and China Gateball Exhibition Hall
  • Spectacular opening and closing ceremonies
  • Large crowds
  • Extensive media coverage including a live telecast of the closing ceremony

The five Australian teams collectively won 3 wins of their 15 matches and were unsuccessful in reaching the knockout phase.  Australian teams fought hard and many results were close throughout with the opposition getting away in the last few minutes. Southport and Canberra recorded wins with Canberra finishing second in their block.
