2014 Blue Mountains Gateball Competition

More than 50 gateballers from around Queensland, NSW and the ACT braved heavy rain and high winds to take part in the Blue Mountains 2014 Gateball Competition in February.

Over two days, teams from Tamborine Mountain Queensland, Canberra, Jamberoo, Epping/Eastwood/Killara, Young and two from both Newcastle and the Blue Mountains engaged in friendly battles to win the coveted Blue Mountains Gateball Trophy. Rain ponchos and plastic bags were the high fashion outfits of the weekend.

With no Duckworth-Lewis rules in Gateball, the teams kept on playing valiantly on increasingly waterlogged courts and rain stopped play for only a couple of games.

A brief break in the clouds allowed the Final to be played in a dry half hour and an exciting game saw the Canberra Young Turks emerging as winners with Tamborine Mountain Raptors very close runners up.

Tamborine Mountain Raptors also won the Minor Premiers Award and the Newcastle Kingfishers were Winners in the Second Pool.

Full scores are available on the Croquet Scores website.

Special mention must go to Reagh and Bev, the two players from Young who had first picked up a gateball mallet just 4 weeks ago. Joined with the Canberra players into the aptly named Canberra Young Turks, the Young players were thrilled to be part of the winning team. Bragging rights when they get home to Young no doubt!
