Suzuki Cup Round 7

The final round of the QGTC was held at the Caloundra Mallet sports Club over the weekend of the 9th and 10th November with the host club staging their “Masters and Apprentices” tournament. Nine teams entered the competition had to encounter some hot and windy weather that at times got very blustery. The well organised event resulted in the Ipswich club gaining top spot on the podium followed by Southport and Bribie Island rounding out the top three.

After the competition, the results were tallied and Queensland Gateball Director, Bruce McAlister awarded the Suzuki Cup to the Tamborine Mountain Raptors who managed a 74.36% success rating throughout the year. Tamborine Mountain Gateball Captain, Peter Quaife accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and thanked all participants for their continued support and attendance at the year’s Gateball events.

Gateball Doubles at Southport's Mallet Sports on the Broadwater

By Barbara Northcott

There were many interesting games during the day and a half of the doubles competition. See-sawing swings of play meant no game was ever completely over until the final seconds ticked off. There were two father and son combinations – the experienced pairing of Gareth and David Hughes and the novices of Chris and Lee Wentworth. Chris and Lee actually defeated Gareth and David. However, they saved their best for the final game against Barbara and Jim Northcott. In that game Chris demonstrated truly superb skills in gateball. He is twelve years old so in the years ahead he and his dad will be a real force in the game of gateball. Lee only began playing seriously in the last few months.

The winner was the consistent pair of Penny and John Park who had five wins. Congratulations on a good tournament! John and Penny were visiting from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales although they were regular Queensland players until a few years ago. Four teams were on four wins and fighting for second place which eventually went to David and Gareth Hughes on a count back. Third place went to Chris and Lee Wentworth.

2013 Suzuki Cup Report Round 2

On the weekend of 20-21 April 2013, Gateballers from around Queensland congregated at the McIlwraith Croquet Club for the annual running of “The McIlwraith Challenge”, the second event in the Queensland Gateball Teams Championship. The event was well attended with eleven teams competing for the honour of being declared the winner.

The level of competition was once again of a high standard with some games going down to a “shootout” to find the winner and many more wins being achieved by the slimmest of margins. Ipswich and Tamborine Mountain Raptors both completed the round robin event on equal wins but the better for and against gained by Tamborine Mountain got them over the line. Broadbeach with only one less win picked up third place.

After round two of the Championship sees Caloundra maintain a healthy percentage of 87.5 although have only competed in one tournament. In second place is Tamborine Mountain Raptors with a percentage of 76.47 and Broadbeach third with an overall percentage of 66.67.

The event attracted nine teams coming from as far as Rockhampton and playing in very warm conditions. The standard of competition was of a high standard with teams battling it out in some very close contests.

The winner of the event was the Caloundra Club with an impressive display of gateball – winning seven of their eight games over the weekend. A consistent effort by their team has set the bar high for the rest of the season. Runners up were Tamborine Mountain with six wins and Toowoomba finishing third with five wins.
